Smarter About Drugs: A conversation pack is designed to help educators and community leaders facilitate intelligent and informed discussions about drug and alcohol issues. Uniquely, this resource introduces participants to the concept that there is a range of possibilities for taking individual and collective action in a democratic society. The pack can be adapted for use from middle secondary school to adults.

The pack is designed to:

– facilitate critical thinking about drug and alcohol use among young Australians;

– empower young people to take ownership of harm minimisation strategies; and

– give young people a voice in policy development and decisions, which often have the greatest impact on their age group.

Young people are amongst those most affected by policies and laws relating to the sale, use and law enforcement of alcohol and other substances, yet are often excluded from conversations around their development. This conversation pack aims to empower young people to be part of these debates and, if motivated, to provide feedback to policy makers.

Smarter About Drugs: A conversation pack can also be adapted for use in other subjects, to allow schools to integrate drug safety messages across the teaching curriculum – additional example materials are available at Smarter About Drugs: Global Politics.

Smarter About Drugs: A conversation pack is an initiative of YoungA21, supported by Australia21 and the Australian Lions Drug Awareness Foundation (ALDAF). All proceeds from its sale will help develop and promote the Smarter About Drugs strategy.
